
Mao Ancestral Hall Mao Ancestral Hall that is the general Mao ancestral hall in Shaoshan lies on “Eighteen Disciples of the Buddha” hill, Shaoshan village. It was built from 1758 to 1763. It is half-timbered and its building area is 668.8 square meters. There are three rooms in it. The first room is theatrical stage. The second room is middle hall, where all families work, talk and fete here. The third room is Xiang room, that ancestors’ memorial tablets are consecrate in it. In 1952, Mao Zedong started the peasant movement in Shaoshan. During February and March, he and his wife founded a peasant night school here. They disseminated knowledge and revolution to peasants, and enlightened them to against for liberation. In September, 1972, Mao Ancestral Hall was publicly announced as the Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit. On Oct, 10th, 1983, it was included in the National Cultural Relics Protection Unit-Mao Zedong’s Former Residence. On May, 25th, 2006, it was listed as the supplement of the National Cultural Relics Protection Unit-Mao Zedong’s Former Residence.
