Shaoshan has the humid subtropical monsoon climate with distinctive seasons. The annual average temperature is 16.7, slightly lower than the counties around; the annual extreme high temperature is 39.5 (in Sept. 1, 1963); the average temperature in January is 4.4, with 78% of the freeze-up period of 5 or more days occurring within this month. July is the hottest with the average temperature being 28.9.

Shaoshan has an annual average precipitation of 1,358 mm with 1719.9 mm as the highest record. The rainy season lasts from about April 15 to July 10. Generally, it rains often in spring and summer whereas seldom in autumn and winter.

Shaoshan enjoys 1717 hours of sunshine per year (the annual average sunshine percentage is 39%), distributing according to the temperature changes, i.e. less sunshine during January to March and most in July. After September’s coming, it is the season for hill-climbing, chrysanthemum appreciation and moon admiration.
